Organizational structure – Canadian Conservation Institute

The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI), a special operating agency within the Department of Canadian Heritage, advances and promotes the conservation of Canada’s heritage collections through its expertise in conservation science, treatment and preventive conservation. CCI works with heritage institutions and professionals to ensure that their heritage collections are preserved and accessible to Canadians now and in the future.

CCI is composed of three groups:

Director General Office

The Office of the Director General oversees the operations and strategic direction of the Canadian Conservation Institute and the Canadian Heritage Information Network (CCI and CHIN). The office also acts as a liaison between CCI and CHIN and the senior levels of the Department of Canadian Heritage.

Research, Conservation and Scientific Services Directorate

The Research, Conservation and Scientific Services Directorate includes the conservation experts that serve heritage institutions and professionals by providing conservation advice and services, carrying out research projects, conducting workshops, giving lectures at professional conferences and publishing conservation resources and articles in journals or other publications.

The Research, Conservation and Scientific Services Directorate is composed of five divisions:

Director’s Office, Research, Conservation and Scientific Services Directorate

Conservation Science Division

The Conservation Science Division carries out applied research to understand and improve conservation treatments and materials, to investigate the composition of cultural heritage objects and to study their deterioration. Staff also provides scientific services to heritage institutions. Services include analysis, examination and scientific photodocumentation of objects, evaluation of conservation products and materials, and on-site scientific services.

Preventive Conservation Division

The Preventive Conservation Division provides preventive conservation advice and services to heritage institutions and professionals. Applied research and modelling are used to develop preventive conservation strategies, guidelines and tools. Services provided include risk and facility advisory services, as well as technical support to other federal government programs and services, such as the Canada Travelling Exhibitions Indemnification Program and the Designation of institutions and public authorities.

Treatment and Collection Care – Textiles, Paintings, Polychrome Surfaces, Heritage Furniture and Wooden Objects Division

The Treatment and Collection Care – Textiles, Paintings, Polychrome Surfaces, Heritage Furniture and Wooden Objects Division develops and carries out conservation treatments and research on historical, cultural and Indigenous objects such as clothing, tapestries, paintings, sculptures and furnishings. Conservators also respond to general information requests and provide expert advice on the care and conservation of objects and collections through workshops, training or on-site conservation services.

Treatment and Collection Care – Objects, Paper and Archaeology Division

The Treatment and Collection Care – Objects, Paper and Archaeology Division develops and carries out conservation treatments and research on historical, cultural and Indigenous objects such as works of art on paper, books, archival materials and photographs, and archaeological objects and materials. Conservators also respond to general information requests and provide expert advice on the care and conservation of objects and collections through workshops, training, on-site conservation services and archaeological conservation services.

Heritage Interiors Conservation Division

The Heritage Interiors Conservation Division provides advice and services related to the management, care and preservation of built heritage decorative finishes and architectural elements, primarily for clients in the federal government sector. The division provides logistical support to Public Services and Procurement Canada for the rehabilitation of the Centre Block, the Supreme Court of Canada Building and other capital projects within the National Capital. It develops strategies and plans to store, conserve and manage heritage assets, fostering an environment of good heritage stewardship practice.

Heritage Information Directorate

The Heritage Information Directorate is responsible for the dissemination of CCI’s conservation knowledge and oversees the work of the CHIN. The role of the directorate is

Knowledge Sharing Division

The Knowledge Sharing Division’s experts manage and coordinate the development of products and services, such as publications, communications, videos and training sessions, which are designed to share knowledge about the management and conservation of heritage collections. They also manage the CCI Library and the CCI and CHIN websites. Furthermore, they respond to client inquiries, providing information and advice.

Business Innovation Division

The Business Innovation Division oversees the internal operations and services that support the daily execution of CCI and CHIN’s program mandates. Responsibilities include corporate planning and reporting, copyright management, object and project control, record and information management, public tours, publication sales, occupational health and safety, and accommodation services.
