Northern Service Centres
The offices of the Northern Services Centres have resumed in-person operations.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) created the Northern Service Centres to provide a year-round presence to support individuals and businesses in the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
Please note that there is no walk-in counter service offered in any CRA locations.
Services offered
For individuals and community organizations
Employees operating from the Northern Service Centres will support individuals and community organizations through outreach visits and in the centres by:
- directing clients to free tax clinics
- answering questions and distributing information related to benefits and credits individuals should receive
- assisting clients with CRA communications (e.g., letters from the CRA)
- promoting and supporting the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP)
- helping clients access CRA’s digital services, including:
- registering for My Account
- submitting documents online
For businesses
Employees operating from the Northern Service Centres will be available to assist small businesses and self-employed individuals schedule either virtual or in-person visits with a Liaison Officer to help them meet their tax obligations.
During an in-person visit, Liaison Officers will support businesses by:
- answering small business tax-related questions and addressing concerns
- providing information on the various tools and services offered by the CRA
- having a detailed and personalized discussion about their books and records and providing recommendations on how small businesses can strengthen their bookkeeping systems
The Liaison Officer program will also be proactively reaching out to community organizations, business groups, or other stakeholders to offer virtual or in-person services, seminars, and promotional events. Promotional events are intended to explain the Liaison Officer service, its benefits, and how to access it, to a requesting organization or group’s membership. Seminars present information on topics such as maintaining books and records, common tax errors, or how to use financial bench marks. Seminars can also present information on specific tax issues relevant to the requesting organization’s membership.
The Liaison Officers will act as a liaison between the northern business community and CRA operations.
Please note: CRA agents at the Northern Service Centres cannot:
- complete income tax and benefit returns and forms
- accept payments of any form
- receive and send mail, returns, documentation, or forms
- provide bulk printout requests (Notices of Assessment) to Tax Practitioners or Tax Specialists
- provide Problem Resolution Program (PRP) services

Please note that there is no walk-in counter service offered in the Northern Service Centres or any CRA office. The Service Canada Centres that are located in the same buildings as the Northern Service Centres will remain the primary point of contact for individuals seeking CRA-related guidance and access to a wide range of government services and benefits.

Other resources for northern residents
Free tax clinics
Individuals with a modest income and a simple tax situation may be eligible to have their income tax and benefit return completed for free through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program.
Small business visits and seminars
The CRA offers a free Liaison Officer service to owners of small businesses and self-employed individuals to help them understand their tax obligations.
Outreach visits for organizations
The CRA offers free outreach visits to organizations that serve vulnerable individuals in Canada. CRA outreach officers provide in-person sessions to answer questions and distribute information products to your clients to raise awareness of the benefits and credits that individuals might be entitled to.
Claiming northern residents deductions
The CRA has improved the information it provides on northern residents deductions and how to claim them. Tools exist to help individuals, such as Information Sheet RC4650, Northern Residents Deductions for 2017, which contains a checklist for claiming the deductions.
Dedicated telephone service for territorial residents
Residents of the Territories (with the 867 area code) can call the dedicated individual and benefit enquiries or the business enquiries telephone line for access to agents who can assist with tax and benefit related questions.
